Singapore University of Technology and Design

The Singapore University of Technology and Design is a public autonomous university in Singapore, established in 2009 and opened to students in 2012. It was created with a founding collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a specialist university of technology and design rather than a comprehensive campus. The campus is at 8 Somapah Road in Upper Changi, in the east of the island.

Undergraduate and graduate education is organized in four pillars: Architecture and Sustainable Design, Engineering Product Development, Engineering Systems and Design, and Information Systems Technology and Design, plus a Master of Architecture pathway. Graduate students work in design studios, fabrication labs and research centers such as the SUTD-MIT International Design Center. Strengths are in design-centric engineering, architecture, systems and information technology.

Enrollment is about 2,500 students, mostly undergraduates, with a smaller graduate cohort and a high share of international students by Singapore standards, drawn from Asia, Europe and North America. Faculty number a few hundred, many recruited through the MIT collaboration. The alumni body is still young and concentrated in engineering, design, architecture and technology startups.

Graduate awards include the Master of Engineering, Master of Architecture, Master of Science and the PhD. Study mixes studio project work, taught modules and research supervision, with a cohort culture carried over from the undergraduate model. The academic year uses terms rather than a loose seminar calendar. Research scholarships are the main support for PhD students. The Changi campus is residential; graduate life is more campus-centered than at downtown universities.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Singapore University of Technology and Design lists 1 doctoral program, in computer science. Singapore University of Technology and Design holds rank 302 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
