About Auburn University
Auburn University is a public land-grant university in Auburn, Alabama. It opened in 1856 as East Alabama Male College, became the state's land-grant campus in 1872, and took its present name in 1960. The main campus covers about 1,840 acres in a college town between Montgomery and Atlanta and is organized as 12 colleges that still pair Morrill Act fields with arts, sciences, and the professions.
Graduate work runs through those colleges, with particular depth in the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, the College of Agriculture, forestry and wildlife sciences, the Harrison College of Pharmacy, and the College of Veterinary Medicine. Graduate students also use the National Center for Asphalt Technology, the veterinary teaching hospital, and engineering and agricultural laboratories on campus and at outlying research stations.
About 33,000 students enroll, including roughly 6,000 in graduate and professional programs. International students are a single-digit share of the total and come from nearly 100 countries. The faculty numbers about 1,400. Notable alumni include Apple chief executive Tim Cook, basketball player Charles Barkley, and athlete Bo Jackson.
Graduate degrees include the M.A., M.S., M.B.A., Ph.D., Pharm.D., and D.V.M. Research students work under a faculty supervisor on a semester calendar, and doctoral support in the sciences, engineering, and agriculture is usually an assistantship. Housing and daily life center on campus and the adjoining Auburn-Opelika community rather than a large city.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Auburn University lists 173 graduate programs across 40 subjects: 114 master's programs and 58 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in education, agriculture, food & forestry and health & medical sciences.
