About Baylor College of Medicine
Baylor College of Medicine is a private health-sciences university in Houston, Texas. It opened in 1900 in Dallas as a medical department and moved to Houston in 1943, settling in the Texas Medical Center. It separated from Baylor University in 1969 and operates as an independent college of medicine, biomedical science, and health professions rather than a full-campus university.
The college comprises a School of Medicine, a Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and a School of Health Professions. It is known for genetics and genomics, cardiovascular surgery and research, pediatrics, and molecular biology. Graduate and medical students train at Texas Children's Hospital, Ben Taub Hospital, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, and Baylor St. Luke's, and in the Human Genome Sequencing Center and the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center.
About 3,000 students and trainees are enrolled across MD, PhD, dual-degree, and health-professions programs, with a smaller international share than a comprehensive university. The faculty is large by medical-school standards, numbering in the thousands including affiliated clinicians. Surgeon Michael E. DeBakey spent his career on the faculty; alumni include former National Cancer Institute director Andrew von Eschenbach.
The college is known for the MD, the biomedical PhD, the MD/PhD, and health-professions master's and doctoral degrees. Medical study lasts four years with clinical clerkships in the Medical Center; PhD training is laboratory-based under a dissertation advisor. Clinical years run year-round. Funding comes from NIH training grants, fellowships, and institutional scholarships. Students live in Houston and work inside the Texas Medical Center.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Baylor College of Medicine lists 9 graduate programs in biology and neuroscience: 1 master's program and 8 doctoral programs.
