About Brigham Young University–Provo
Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, is a private university founded in 1875 and owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is a large undergraduate-centered institution with a smaller graduate division that includes the Marriott School of Business and the J. Reuben Clark Law School. A university honor code and church affiliation shape housing, conduct, and campus life.
Colleges include humanities, physical and mathematical sciences, life sciences, engineering, family, home, and social sciences, fine arts and communications, nursing, and religious education, plus the Marriott School and the law school. Accounting, business, languages, engineering, and family sciences are frequent graduate strengths. The Harold B. Lee Library and church-related collections support humanities and religious studies.
Enrollment is about 34,000, of whom only a few thousand are graduate and law students. International students are a minority; many students are returned missionaries with language training. Faculty number about 1,300. Notable alumni include politician Mitt Romney, writer Stephen R. Covey, and football quarterback Steve Young.
Graduate degrees include the M.B.A., M.Acc., J.D., Ph.D., and a range of master's degrees. Business and law are coursework-heavy professional programs; science and engineering doctorates follow research supervision. The calendar is semester-based with spring and summer terms. Research assistantships support many doctoral students. Provo sits below the Wasatch Range, and campus life is organized around a single large campus rather than a city-center scatter of schools.
