About CUNY-Brooklyn College

Brooklyn College is a senior college of the City University of New York in the Midwood neighborhood of Brooklyn. It opened in 1930 as a merger of City College's Brooklyn branch and Hunter College's Brooklyn branch, and it remains a public liberal-arts college within the CUNY system rather than a free-standing research university.

The college is organized into schools of humanities and social sciences, natural and behavioral sciences, education, business, and visual, media and performing arts. Graduate work is strong in education, psychology, speech-language pathology, and the sciences. Many doctoral students are supervised by Brooklyn College faculty through the CUNY Graduate Center while using Midwood labs and classrooms.

Enrollment is about 14,000 students, mostly undergraduates, with a few thousand in graduate and professional programs. The student body reflects New York's immigrant mix. Alumni include Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress; Bernie Sanders; and filmmaker Woody Allen. The campus occupies about 35 acres along Bedford Avenue.

Doctoral study tied to the college typically runs through CUNY's consortium model: coursework and a dissertation under Brooklyn College and Graduate Center faculty, on a semester calendar. Master's and advanced certificates are also taught on campus. Students work a commuter campus in southern Brooklyn, with subway access to the rest of the city and to CUNY research facilities in Manhattan.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, CUNY-Brooklyn College lists 1 doctoral program, in health & medical sciences.
