About Capella University
Capella University is a private university founded in 1993 in Minneapolis to serve working adults through distance education. It received regional accreditation as it grew from a school of organization and management into a multi-school university. It is part of Strategic Education, Inc., with Strayer University as a sister institution, and it has no residential undergraduate campus of the traditional kind.
Academic units include schools of business, education, nursing and health sciences, counseling and human services, psychology, and information technology. Graduate offerings range across master's degrees and a large set of doctorates, including PhD, PsyD, DBA and EdD programs. Some fields use the FlexPath competency-based format.
Enrollment has been in the tens of thousands, the great majority graduate students living across the United States rather than in Minneapolis. Faculty are largely practitioner-scholars teaching online. The alumni body is made up of working professionals in education, healthcare, counseling and business. There is no single undergraduate residential community of the kind found at older campus universities.
Doctoral study is online coursework plus, in some programs, brief residencies and a dissertation or capstone. The calendar is year-round with frequent start dates. Students remain in their home cities; Minneapolis is the legal and administrative seat rather than a daily campus.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Capella University lists 1 doctoral program, in psychology.
