About Catholic University of America
The Catholic University of America is a private Catholic research university in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The United States bishops founded it in 1887 as a pontifical university for graduate study; undergraduate colleges were added later. It remains the national university of the Catholic Church in the United States and is organized as a campus of schools rather than a collegiate system.
Twelve schools include Theology and Religious Studies, Canon Law, Philosophy, Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Architecture and Planning, Music, Drama, and Art, Nursing, Social Service, Law, and Business. Graduate students in theology, canon law, and philosophy work in a pontifical faculty structure. Architecture, engineering, music, and nursing run professional graduate programs. The campus sits among other Catholic institutions in Brookland.
Enrollment is about 5,000 students, with graduate students a substantial share. Students come from the United States and from many countries with Catholic higher-education ties. The faculty numbers in the hundreds. Alumni include actress Susan Sarandon, actor John Slattery, and television host Ed McMahon.
The university awards the Ph.D., professional doctorates, and a range of master's degrees, including ecclesiastical degrees in theology and canon law. Doctoral work is supervisor-led with seminars; professional programs mix coursework and practicum. The calendar is two semesters. Graduate students live on or near a compact urban campus with Metro access to the rest of Washington.
