About City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center
City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center is a biomedical research institute and hospital campus in Duarte, California, east of Los Angeles. It began in 1913 as a free tuberculosis sanitarium and later shifted to cancer, diabetes and other major diseases. It is a specialist medical and research campus rather than a general university, with a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center at its core.
Research and training run through the Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope and the City of Hope National Medical Center. Strengths include cancer biology, hematopoietic cell transplantation, diabetes and regenerative medicine. The Irell & Manella Graduate School of Biological Sciences, opened in 1994, is the home for doctoral students, who work in faculty laboratories on the Duarte campus.
The graduate school is small, on the order of about 100 students, almost all in research doctorates, with an international mix typical of U.S. biomedical Ph.D. programs. Faculty include physician-scientists and laboratory investigators. City of Hope is associated with work on synthetic human insulin by Arthur Riggs and colleagues, and with large clinical programs in cancer.
Graduate study is a research Ph.D. in biological sciences, with laboratory rotations, then dissertation supervision and little standalone professional master's culture. The calendar follows a year-round research-institute rhythm. Students are typically funded on stipends and research grants and live in the San Gabriel Valley while working on a compact medical campus.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center lists 1 doctoral program, in biology.
