About Cleveland State University
Cleveland State University is a public urban university in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. It was established in 1964 when the State of Ohio took over Fenn College, founded in 1923, and later absorbed the city's law school, whose roots go back to 1897. It is a city-center state university with a professional and applied research mission rather than a land-grant agricultural college.
The university is organized in colleges of law, business, engineering, education and human services, liberal arts and social sciences, sciences and health professions, and urban affairs. Graduate students concentrate in law, engineering, business, urban studies and health-related fields. The College of Law, long known as Cleveland-Marshall, the Washkewicz College of Engineering and the Levin College of Urban Affairs are the units that most shape doctoral and professional study.
Enrollment is about 14,000 to 16,000 students, with several thousand in graduate and professional programs and a modest international share. Faculty number about 500 full-time. Alumni are concentrated in Northeast Ohio law, business, government and engineering.
Graduate study includes the J.D., Ph.D. and a range of professional master's degrees, with coursework-heavy professional programs and research doctorates in selected fields. The calendar is semester-based. Assistantships and urban professional placements are common funding routes. Students work on a compact downtown campus next to Cleveland's business district, courts and cultural institutions.
