About Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a private, nonprofit research institution on the north shore of Long Island, New York. It traces to a biological station founded in 1890 and became an independent laboratory in genetics and cancer research over the twentieth century. It is a research institute with a small graduate school, not a multi-school university.
Core science is cancer, neuroscience, plant biology, quantitative biology and genomics. The laboratory runs a meetings and courses program that draws scientists from many countries. Ph.D. training is housed in the Watson School of Biological Sciences, established in 1998, with students embedded in faculty laboratories rather than in departmental lecture faculties.
The Ph.D. program is very small, on the order of several dozen students, a mix of U.S. and international research students rather than a large undergraduate population. The scientific staff numbers a few hundred. Figures tied to the laboratory include Barbara McClintock, Alfred Hershey and James D. Watson, who served as director.
Graduate study is a research Ph.D. with an accelerated coursework opening, then full-time laboratory supervision. The scientific year is continuous. Students are funded on institutional stipends. Campus life is that of a waterside research campus in the village of Cold Spring Harbor, with New York City reachable but not the daily setting.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory lists 1 doctoral program, in biology.
