About Elon University

Elon University is a private university in Elon, North Carolina, founded in 1889 as Elon College by the Christian Church, later aligned with the United Church of Christ. It took the university name in 2001 after adding professional schools to a residential arts-and-sciences college in the Piedmont between Greensboro and Raleigh. Its structure remains that of a small teaching campus with attached graduate and professional units rather than a multi-college research system.

Work is organized in Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences; the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business; the School of Communications; the School of Education; the School of Health Sciences; and the School of Law in Greensboro. Communications, business, education, and clinical health fields are the usual graduate destinations. Law is taught in Greensboro; other graduate students remain on the Elon campus.

About 7,000 students enroll, most of them undergraduates, with several hundred in graduate and professional programs and a modest international share. The faculty numbers several hundred. Alumni are concentrated in journalism and media, business, and education.

The university is known for master's degrees in business, education, and related professional fields, plus the J.D. in Greensboro. Teaching is coursework-heavy on a semester calendar, with close faculty contact. Aid follows typical private-university assistantships and professional-school packages. Graduate life is that of a small college town next to Burlington, with law students based in the larger Greensboro legal market.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Elon University lists 2 graduate programs in accounting and communication, media & journalism, all of them master's programs.
