About Emerson College
Emerson College is a private college in Boston, Massachusetts, founded in 1880 by Charles Wesley Emerson as a school of oratory. It grew from elocution and speech into a college of communication and the arts, and it occupies a compact urban campus in Boston's Theatre District. It is a specialist communications and performing-arts institution rather than a full research university.
Schools and departments cover journalism, marketing communication, writing, literature and publishing, communication sciences and disorders, visual and media arts, and performing arts. Graduate students use production studios, the Paramount and other theatre spaces, and the Los Angeles campus for film and television work. Clinical facilities support speech-language pathology training.
Emerson enrolls about 5,800 students, including roughly 1,500 graduate students, with a modest international share. Faculty are concentrated in media and the arts. The undergraduate majority shares downtown residence halls with graduate students who often live off campus in Boston. Alumni include television producer Norman Lear, comedian Jay Leno, and actor Henry Winkler.
Graduate study is mainly professional master's degrees in journalism, film and media, publishing, communication disorders, and related fields, with studio, newsroom, and clinical hours alongside seminars. The calendar is a U.S. semester system. Funding is a mix of assistantships and merit awards typical of a small private college. Students live in downtown Boston, with internships in local media and theatres, and some programs shift to Los Angeles for industry placements.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Emerson College lists 1 master's program, in communication, media & journalism.
