Emory University

Emory University is a private research university in Atlanta, Georgia. The Methodist Episcopal Church founded it in 1836 as Emory College in Oxford, Georgia. It relocated to Atlanta's Druid Hills neighborhood in 1915, supported by a gift from Coca-Cola's Asa Griggs Candler. The original Oxford campus remains as Oxford College, a two-year division. The main campus sits on the northeast side of the city, next to the headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Emory has nine schools and colleges: Emory College of Arts and Sciences, Oxford College, the Laney Graduate School, the Goizueta Business School, the School of Law, the School of Medicine, the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, the Rollins School of Public Health and the Candler School of Theology. Health sciences dominate its research activity. Key centers include Emory Healthcare, Winship Cancer Institute and the Emory National Primate Research Center, and the university also has close ties with the Carter Center and the CDC.

The university enrolls about 15,000 students, and graduate and professional students make up nearly half. International students are concentrated in public health, business and doctoral programs. Former President Jimmy Carter taught at Emory as a University Distinguished Professor for decades. Alumni include former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Vice President Alben Barkley.

Emory is known for professional degrees in the health professions, including the MPH and MSPH at Rollins, the MSN and DNP at the nursing school, the MD, and the MDiv at Candler, along with the Goizueta MBA and the JD. PhD programs are coordinated through the Laney Graduate School, including the Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, and typically carry full tuition and a stipend. The calendar is semester-based. Graduate students often live in Decatur and the neighborhoods around Druid Hills.
