About Fashion Institute of Technology

The Fashion Institute of Technology is a public college of the State University of New York in Manhattan. It was founded in 1944 to train workers for New York's garment industry and later added bachelor's and master's degrees while remaining a specialist college of art, design, and fashion business. The campus occupies a block in Chelsea, next to the garment district.

Academic work is grouped into schools of art and design, business and technology, and liberal arts. Master's fields include fashion design, fashion business, cosmetics and fragrance marketing, exhibition and experience design, and illustration. The Museum at FIT and New York fashion and retail firms supply exhibitions, internships, and industry projects.

FIT enrolls about 8,000 to 9,000 students, mostly undergraduates, with a smaller graduate population and students from many countries. Faculty combine academic staff with practitioners from design and merchandising. Alumni include fashion designers Calvin Klein and Michael Kors.

Graduate degrees are master's programs that mix studio or project work with seminars, not a doctoral supervision system. The calendar follows the U.S. semester year. Support comes from scholarships, campus jobs, and internships. Students work in studios and commute across New York City.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Fashion Institute of Technology lists 1 master's program, in business & management.
