The university is named for Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet; Edward Miner Gallaudet served as its first president.

American Sign Language is the language of instruction and campus life. Research centers address ASL, deaf education, and related topics.

Faculty include deaf and hearing scholars. Alumni include I. King Jordan, the university's first deaf president, and actress Marlee Matlin, who studied there.

Graduate degrees include master's programs and doctorates such as the Ph.D. and Au.D., with close supervision and clinic or research placements. The calendar is a U.S. semester year.
