About Gerstner Sloan Kettering
The Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences is the graduate school of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. It was established in 2004 and named for Louis V. Gerstner Jr., the former IBM chief executive who funded its launch. It is a specialist biomedical school attached to a cancer hospital and research institute, not a comprehensive university.
Training is organized around Memorial Sloan Kettering laboratories in cancer biology, immunology, chemical biology, computational oncology, and related fields. Students work in the Sloan Kettering Institute and the Center's research buildings on Manhattan's Upper East Side. The school shares a neighborhood and some tri-institutional courses with Weill Cornell Medicine and The Rockefeller University.
The student body is small, on the order of about 100 doctoral students, nearly all in research degrees, with a high share of international trainees. Faculty are the scientific staff of Memorial Sloan Kettering. Alumni enter academic cancer research, biotechnology, and clinical-scientist careers.
The school is known for the Ph.D. in cancer and related biomedical sciences, with laboratory rotations then a thesis in an MSK laboratory. A taught master's is not the main product. Stipends and tuition support follow the U.S. biomedical graduate-school model. Students live in Manhattan or nearby boroughs and work inside a working cancer center.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Gerstner Sloan Kettering lists 2 graduate programs in biology, all of them doctoral programs.
