Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is a private medical school in New York City, opened in 1963 as Mount Sinai School of Medicine and renamed in 2012 for donor Carl Icahn. It is the degree-granting school of the Mount Sinai Health System, whose hospital on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan dates to 1852. It is a specialist biomedical institution, not a comprehensive university.

The school comprises the MD program and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, with dual degrees including MD/PhD and MD/MPH. Research is concentrated in cardiology, cancer, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, and public health, tied to Mount Sinai Hospital and hospitals across the city. Institutes include the Tisch Cancer Institute and the Icahn Genomics Institute.

The student body is on the order of 1,000 MD and graduate students, almost all postgraduate, with a substantial share of international research trainees. Faculty number in the thousands across the health system. Alumni practice throughout U.S. academic medicine and the Mount Sinai hospitals.

Graduate study includes the MD, the PhD in biomedical sciences, and master’s degrees such as public health and biomedical sciences. The PhD is a laboratory apprenticeship under a dissertation advisor; the MD is a four-year professional curriculum with early clinical exposure in system hospitals. The calendar follows the medical-school year. Students work on the Upper East Side and at affiliated hospitals across New York.
