About Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis

Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis was the downtown Indianapolis campus created in 1969 when Indiana University and Purdue University combined their city operations along the White River. In 2024 that dual-brand partnership was split into Indiana University Indianapolis and Purdue University in Indianapolis. For more than fifty years the combined campus was Indiana's urban public research site.

Indiana University carried medicine, dentistry, law, nursing, social work, and liberal arts; Purdue carried engineering, technology, and computer science. The Indiana University School of Medicine, among the largest medical schools in the United States, and the Robert H. McKinney School of Law were the graduate anchors, with University Hospital and related clinical sites. Engineering graduate work sat in the Purdue schools on the same campus.

Combined enrollment was about 27,000 students, with a large share of commuter, graduate, and professional students and a smaller international share than many coastal research universities. Faculty numbered in the thousands because of the medical school. Alumni include Vice President Mike Pence, a graduate of the McKinney School of Law, and many Indiana physicians, lawyers, and engineers.

Graduate study mixed professional master's work with medicine, law, health, public affairs, and engineering. The calendar was the standard U.S. semester. Funding mixed assistantships, clinical stipends, and professional-school aid. Students lived in downtown Indianapolis rather than a residential college, with hospitals and state government a short transit ride away.
