About Johns hopkins Medicine
Johns Hopkins Medicine is the academic medical enterprise of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, combining the School of Medicine, which opened in 1893, with The Johns Hopkins Hospital, which opened in 1889. The university was founded in 1876 as a research university; the East Baltimore medical campus grew as its clinical and graduate-education arm. The School of Medicine helped set the American pattern of laboratory science joined to bedside teaching.
Training runs through the School of Medicine and affiliated institutes, including the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Wilmer Eye Institute, and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Strengths are biomedical science, clinical investigation, and collaboration with the Bloomberg School of Public Health. PhD programs in the biomedical sciences sit alongside the MD and dual MD/PhD tracks.
The School of Medicine enrolls on the order of 480 MD students and several hundred PhD and master's students in biomedical fields. Faculty number in the thousands across the medical campus. Nobel laureates affiliated with Johns Hopkins include Peter Agre and Carol Greider; medical alumni include neurosurgeon Ben Carson and many academic clinicians.
The MD is a four-year professional degree; PhD training is laboratory apprenticeship with some coursework. The calendar follows university semesters plus year-round clinical rotations. Stipends support most doctoral researchers. Students live in East Baltimore and nearby neighborhoods, with the Homewood arts-and-sciences campus a short shuttle ride away.
