About Lehigh University

Lehigh University is a private research university in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, founded in 1865 by industrialist Asa Packer to train engineers for the Lehigh Valley. It added arts, business, health, and education while keeping engineering and applied science at the center. The main campus occupies the north slope of South Mountain above the former Bethlehem Steel works.

Four colleges organize teaching: Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering and Applied Science, and Health. The College of Education offers graduate professional degrees. Engineering research includes the ATLSS Center for large structures and materials. Business, materials science, chemistry, and industrial and systems engineering are frequent graduate destinations. The Iacocca Institute supports leadership and international programs.

About 7,000 students enroll, including roughly 5,500 undergraduates and about 1,800 graduate students. International students are a visible minority, especially in engineering master's programs. Faculty number several hundred. Notable alumni include auto executive Lee Iacocca, former Deloitte chief executive Cathy Engelbert, and astronaut Terry Hart.

Graduate study includes the Ph.D., M.S., M.B.A., M.Ed., and professional master's in engineering. Engineering degrees mix coursework with laboratory and sponsored research; doctoral work is supervision-led. Semesters structure the year. Research and teaching assistantships are the usual support for doctoral students. Bethlehem is a small city, and graduate life concentrates on the mountain campus and the South Side district.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Lehigh University lists 93 graduate programs across 32 subjects: 65 master's programs and 28 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in education, civil engineering and electrical engineering.
