About Long Island University
Long Island University is a private university in New York, founded in 1926. Its main suburban campus, LIU Post, occupies a former estate in Brookville on Long Island's North Shore; a second campus operates in downtown Brooklyn. The university grew from a Brooklyn college into a two-campus institution after opening the C.W. Post campus in 1954, named for Marjorie Merriweather Post. The defining structure is that dual-campus private university with professional schools.
Colleges and schools cover liberal arts, business, education, health professions, nursing, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine. Graduate students concentrate in pharmacy, health sciences, education, business, and the sciences. Clinical and laboratory training draws on affiliated hospitals and on-campus professional facilities at Post and in Brooklyn.
Total enrolment is about 15,000 across campuses, mostly undergraduates, with several thousand graduate and professional students. International students are a noticeable share, especially in Brooklyn. Faculty number in the hundreds. Alumni work in New York health care, education, media, and business.
Professional doctorates such as the Pharm.D. sit beside master's degrees and a smaller set of research doctorates. Professional programs are coursework and clinical-rotation based; research degrees use a supervisor and committee. The calendar is a U.S. semester system. Assistantships and professional scholarships are the usual aid. Graduate life is split between the roughly 300-acre Brookville campus and urban Brooklyn.
