About Loyola University Chicago
Loyola University Chicago is a private Jesuit Catholic university in Chicago, Illinois, founded in 1870 as St. Ignatius College and later taking the Loyola name. It operates as a research university on several sites: a lakeshore campus in Rogers Park, a Water Tower campus on North Michigan Avenue, and a health-sciences campus in Maywood. Jesuit professional schools in law, medicine, and ministry sit beside a conventional arts-and-sciences core.
Units include the College of Arts and Sciences, the Quinlan School of Business, the School of Law, the Stritch School of Medicine, and schools of nursing, social work, education, communication, and environmental sustainability, plus a graduate school. Biomedical students train at Stritch and Loyola University Medical Center. Downtown business and law classrooms, and theology and social-work programs, are the other graduate magnets.
Enrollment is about 17,000, with several thousand graduate and professional students and a modest international share. Faculty number in the low thousands including clinical staff. Alumni are visible in Chicago media, civic life, and letters; they include comedian Bob Newhart, writer Sandra Cisneros, and actor Chris O'Donnell.
Graduate study covers research Ph.D. programs and professional degrees including the J.D., M.D., M.B.A., and nursing and social-work master's. Doctoral work is coursework plus dissertation; professional schools are clinic- and cohort-based. The calendar is semester-based. Assistantships and hospital appointments support some trainees; many professional master's students fund themselves. Students divide time among Rogers Park, the Loop, and Maywood on Chicago transit.
