Mayo Clinic

Mayo Clinic is a nonprofit academic medical center headquartered in Rochester, Minnesota, with additional campuses in Jacksonville, Florida, and Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona. The clinical practice grew from William Worrall Mayo and his sons William J. and Charles H. Mayo; Saint Marys Hospital opened in Rochester in 1889 and is the usual founding marker. It is a physician-led group practice and hospital system with an attached college, not a comprehensive liberal-arts university.

Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science comprises the Alix School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Health Sciences, and the School of Graduate Medical Education. Graduate students work in the hospitals and in laboratory programs tied to those schools. The Graduate School offers PhD and master's training in biomedical sciences; the medical school offers the MD and combined MD-PhD.

Education programs enroll several thousand students and trainees, a small number beside a staff of tens of thousands. International trainees are a regular part of residencies and the graduate school. Edward C. Kendall and Philip S. Hench of Mayo shared the 1950 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for cortisone. The Mayo brothers remain the institution's defining names.

Doctoral study is laboratory- and clinic-based, with year-round medical calendars rather than a long undergraduate summer break. PhD students are typically funded as graduate researchers. Daily life in Rochester is that of a medical campus town; Jacksonville and Arizona offer the same model on smaller footprints.
