About Montana State University

Montana State University is Montana's land-grant university, located in Bozeman. It was founded in 1893 as the Agricultural College of the State of Montana and grew into the state's main campus for engineering, agriculture, and the sciences. The campus sits on the edge of the Gallatin Valley, with the northern region of Yellowstone National Park within reach. Land-grant teaching, research, and extension remain the organizing mission.

Colleges include agriculture; arts and architecture; business; education, health and human development; engineering; letters and science; and nursing, together with Gallatin College for two-year programs. Graduate students use engineering and physics laboratories, agricultural research lands, and the Museum of the Rockies, a paleontology and natural-history museum on campus. Film and photography, snow science, and engineering are established strengths.

Enrollment is about 16,500 students, including roughly 2,000 graduate students and an international minority from many countries. Instructional faculty number about 800 to 1,000. Notable alumni include former Montana governor Brian Schweitzer and US senator Steve Daines.

Graduate study includes master's and doctoral degrees in engineering, the sciences, agriculture, education, and nursing, with thesis and dissertation supervision the norm in research fields. The calendar is the US semester system. Research assistantships are the main doctoral support. Bozeman is a growing college town where students live close to campus and to mountain recreation.
