About Northeastern University
Northeastern University is a private research university in Boston, Massachusetts, founded in 1898 as an evening institute of the Boston YMCA and chartered as a university in 1922. Cooperative education, begun in 1909, is its defining structure: academic terms alternate with paid professional placements. The main campus occupies Huntington Avenue in the Fenway, with additional sites in Charlotte, Seattle, San Jose, London, Toronto, and Vancouver.
Graduate study is housed in the College of Engineering, Khoury College of Computer Sciences, D'Amore-McKim School of Business, Bouve College of Health Sciences, the College of Science, the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, the College of Arts, Media and Design, the School of Law, and the College of Professional Studies. Computer science, cybersecurity, engineering, and the health professions are the fields most associated with its graduate work. The Institute for Experiential AI is a cross-college research home for doctoral and professional master's students.
The university enrolls about 47,000 students across its network, including more than 15,000 graduate students. International students make up a large share of graduate enrollment, especially in computing and engineering, and come from more than 100 countries. It employs more than 2,000 faculty members. Alumni include EMC co-founder Richard Egan, technology executive Nikesh Arora, and former U.S. senator Mo Cowan.
Doctoral, professional master's, and JD programs are the main graduate routes; many degrees integrate co-op or industry projects rather than a fully residential research year. The academic calendar is organized around co-op cycles as well as semesters. PhD students are typically supported by assistantships; many master's students combine study with employer sponsorship. The campus sits beside Boston's Longwood medical area and within reach of the city's technology employers.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Northeastern University lists 196 graduate programs across 46 subjects: 126 master's programs and 53 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in health & medical sciences, law and public health. Northeastern University holds rank 213 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
