About Old Domino University

Old Dominion University is a public research university in Norfolk, Virginia, on the Elizabeth River in Hampton Roads. It opened in 1930 as the Norfolk Division of the College of William & Mary, became independent in 1962, and gained university status in 1969, taking its name from Virginia's colonial nickname. It grew from a two-year branch into a doctoral university tied to the port, the navy, and regional industry.

Colleges cover arts and letters, sciences, business, education, engineering and technology, health sciences, and graduate studies, with additional work in cybersecurity and ocean sciences. The university is known for oceanography, modeling and simulation, coastal engineering, and nursing. Graduate students use the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center in Suffolk, marine laboratories, and hospital partnerships in Hampton Roads.

Enrollment is about 23,000 to 24,000 students, with several thousand in graduate programs. International students are a minority, drawn from many countries mainly into engineering and the sciences. Faculty number more than 800. Alumni include baseball pitcher Justin Verlander, basketball player and coach Nancy Lieberman, and Olympic basketball player Anne Donovan.

Graduate study includes master's and doctoral degrees in engineering, oceanography, education, and health, plus professional master's programs for working students.
