About Oregon Health & Science University
Oregon Health & Science University is a public academic health center in Portland, Oregon. It descends from a medical department opened in 1887 at Willamette University, later the University of Oregon Medical School, and became an independent public corporation in 1974. Its mission is health sciences and clinical care rather than a full general campus.
Schools include medicine, nursing, dentistry, and the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health, with a graduate school for research degrees. Named centers that matter to graduate students include the Knight Cancer Institute, the Vollum Institute, the Casey Eye Institute, OHSU Hospital and Doernbecher Children's Hospital. Campuses occupy Marquam Hill and the South Waterfront, linked by aerial tram.
About 3,000 students enroll, most of them in professional or graduate programs, with a smaller international share than a large comprehensive university. Faculty and clinical staff number in the thousands. The institution is defined more by clinician-scientists than by a long roster of famous undergraduate alumni. Students come from across the United States and from a smaller set of other countries.
Signature degrees are the MD, PhD, MD-PhD, DNP and MPH. Supervision is laboratory- and clinic-based on a year-round health-science calendar. PhD students are generally funded. Daily life is that of a hospital hill campus above downtown Portland. The aerial tram and South Waterfront labs are part of the working week for many doctoral students.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Oregon Health & Science University lists 2 graduate programs in biology: 1 master's program and 1 doctoral program.
