About Rush University

Rush University is a private health sciences university in Chicago, Illinois, based on the campus of Rush University Medical Center in the Illinois Medical District on the city's Near West Side. Rush Medical College was founded in 1837; the university was organized in 1972 to gather medicine, nursing, allied health and graduate research into one academic health center. It is a specialist institution tied to a teaching hospital rather than a comprehensive arts-and-sciences university.

The university comprises Rush Medical College, the College of Nursing, the College of Health Sciences and The Graduate College. It is known for medicine, nursing, health systems management, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology and biomedical research. Rush University Medical Center is the main teaching hospital, and graduate students also work with the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center and other clinical research units on campus.

Enrollment is about 2,800 students, nearly all in graduate and professional programs, with a modest international share. Faculty are largely clinician-scientists employed through the medical center, numbering in the hundreds of full-time academic staff. Alumni work chiefly as physicians, nurse executives and health-system researchers.

Graduate study is built around the MD, the Doctor of Nursing Practice, the PhD in nursing and biomedical sciences, and professional master's degrees in the health sciences. Education mixes coursework, problem-based learning and long clinical placements in the medical center. The calendar is typically year-round for clinical programs. Support often comes from training grants, teaching or research assistantships and hospital employment. Students live in a dense hospital district west of the Loop, with housing and transit oriented to shift work and clinic hours.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Rush University lists 1 doctoral program, in health & medical sciences.
