About Rutgers University–Newark

Rutgers University-Newark is the Newark campus of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. The city institutions that formed this campus, including the New Jersey Law School of 1908 and the University of Newark, merged into Rutgers in 1946. The campus occupies downtown Newark as an urban public research site, distinct from the older New Brunswick colleges that date to 1766.

Academic units include the Newark College of Arts and Sciences, Rutgers Business School, the Newark faculty of Rutgers Law School, the School of Criminal Justice, the School of Public Affairs and Administration, and nursing and health-related units. Graduate students concentrate in law, business, criminal justice, public administration, and the sciences. Research homes include the Joseph C. Cornwall Center for Metropolitan Studies and laboratories in the University Heights science and medical district.

The Newark campus enrolls about 13,000 students, with a large undergraduate majority and several thousand graduate and professional students. It is among the most racially and ethnically mixed research campuses in the United States, with many first-generation and commuting students and an international intake from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. Faculty number in the hundreds. Alumni of the Newark law school include federal judge Joseph A. Greenaway Jr. and a long roster of New Jersey lawyers and public officials.

Graduate study includes the JD, MBA and specialized master's degrees, and doctoral work in fields such as criminal justice, public administration, and the sciences. Supervision follows the U.S. mix of coursework, qualifying exams, and dissertation or clinical work on a semester calendar. Students use PATH, bus, and NJ Transit links; Manhattan is a short ride, and much of graduate life is that of a commuter campus in a dense city center.
