About Saint Louis University

Saint Louis University is a private Jesuit research university in St. Louis, Missouri, with a second campus in Madrid. Founded in 1818, it is the oldest university west of the Mississippi River and among the oldest Catholic universities in the United States. It grew from a frontier college into a university with professional schools, a teaching hospital, and an overseas campus, while remaining under Jesuit governance.

Academic work is divided among the College of Arts and Sciences, the Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business, Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology, the School of Medicine, the School of Law, the College for Public Health and Social Justice, the Trudy Busch Valentine School of Nursing, and related schools of education and social work. Graduate students in the health sciences train with SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital. Aviation, biomedical research, law, and Catholic social thought are long-standing strengths.

Enrollment is about 15,000, with graduate and professional students a large share in medicine, law, and the health professions. Students come from all 50 states and more than 70 countries, and the Madrid campus adds a European cohort. Alumni include NASA astronaut Thomas Akers, former Nicaraguan president Enrique Bolaños, and a large body of physicians trained at the medical school.

Graduate degrees include the PhD, MD, JD, MPH, MSW, and a range of master's programs. Medicine and law follow professional curricula; arts and sciences doctorates are research-supervised. The calendar is the semester. Assistantships, Jesuit and named scholarships, and hospital appointments support many students. Daily life is urban, centered on the Frost Campus and the medical complex in midtown St. Louis.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Saint Louis University lists 132 graduate programs across 31 subjects: 69 master's programs and 37 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in education, health & medical sciences and public health.
