About Savannah College of Art and Design

Savannah College of Art and Design is a private art and design university founded in 1978 in Savannah, Georgia, by Richard and Paula Rowan. It grew by converting historic buildings in Savannah's Landmark Historic District and later opened sites in Atlanta, in Lacoste, France, and online. It remains a specialist art and design institution rather than a comprehensive university.

Instruction is grouped into building arts, communication arts, design, fashion, fine arts, and film and digital media. The college is known for animation, graphic design, fashion, interior design, architecture, sequential art, and film. Graduate students work in studios, workshops, galleries, and production spaces spread through downtown Savannah, including the original Poetter Hall and later academic buildings.

Enrollment across locations is about 15,000 students, with a large international share from more than 100 countries. Faculty are practicing artists, designers, and filmmakers. Alumni work in film and television studios, fashion houses, and design firms in the United States and abroad.

The principal graduate degrees are the MA, MFA, and MArch. Study is studio- and project-based, with critiques and portfolio production rather than a lecture-heavy model. The college uses a quarter calendar. In Savannah, graduate students live and work in a walkable historic port city with a substantial film-production sector and a campus stitched through the historic district rather than a single gated quadrangle.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Savannah College of Art and Design lists 2 graduate programs in business & management and environmental design, all of them master's programs.
