About Seattle University

Seattle University is a private Jesuit university in Seattle, Washington, on First Hill just east of downtown. It was founded in 1891 by the Society of Jesus and later took the Seattle University name. It is a comprehensive Catholic university in the Jesuit tradition, on a compact urban campus of about 50 acres.

The university includes the College of Arts and Sciences, the Albers School of Business and Economics, the College of Education, the College of Nursing, the College of Science and Engineering, the School of Law and the School of Theology and Ministry. Graduate strengths include law, business, nursing, education, computer science and public administration. Clinical and professional placements use Seattle hospitals, courts and firms.

Enrollment is about 7,000 students, including several thousand in graduate, law and professional programs and an international share of under 15 percent from several dozen countries. Full-time faculty number about 500. Alumni work mainly in law, nursing, education and Pacific Northwest business.

Graduate awards include the JD, MBA, MS in business analytics and computer science, DNP, MEd and theology degrees. Teaching is coursework-heavy with clinics, internships and a Jesuit core, rather than a large PhD apprenticeship culture except in a few fields. The university runs on the quarter calendar. Aid takes the form of scholarships, assistantships and Jesuit-related awards. Graduate students live on First Hill or commute from Seattle neighborhoods, with the downtown core a short walk west.
