About State University of New York at Oswego
The State University of New York at Oswego is a public comprehensive college in the SUNY system, on the shore of Lake Ontario in Oswego, New York. It opened in 1861 as a normal school under Edward Austin Sheldon, who promoted object teaching, and later expanded into a four-year college of arts, sciences, business, and education. That origin as a teacher-training campus that became a regional SUNY college still shapes the institution.
Academic work is organized in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Education, and the School of Communication, Media and the Arts. It is best known for teacher education, broadcasting and communication, and business. The Shineman Center houses science teaching laboratories, and education students work with partner schools across central New York.
Enrollment is about 7,000 to 8,000 students, mostly undergraduates, with graduate students concentrated in education, counseling, and business. International enrollment is a minority share drawn from many countries. The faculty numbers in the hundreds. Alumni are numerous in New York public schools and in regional media and business.
Graduate study is mainly master's degrees and certificates of advanced study, with a mix of coursework and practica rather than a large doctoral college. The calendar is the American semester system.
