About Stowers Institute for Medical Research
The Stowers Institute for Medical Research is an independent biomedical research institute in Kansas City, Missouri, founded in 1994 by James E. Stowers Jr. and Virginia Stowers with an endowment from American Century Investments. It is organized around principal-investigator laboratories rather than undergraduate colleges.
Groups work in developmental biology, genetics, chromatin biology, regenerative biology, and computational biology. The Graduate School of the Stowers Institute awards a PhD in biology and runs shared cores for imaging, sequencing, and animal research.
Several hundred staff work on site, including a small PhD cohort and many postdoctoral researchers, a large share of them from outside the United States. Developmental biologist Robb Krumlauf has been among the scientific leaders.
The degree is a research PhD with rotations, a thesis laboratory, and stipend support. Students work full time in Kansas City laboratories rather than on a conventional university campus.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Stowers Institute for Medical Research lists 1 doctoral program, in biology.
