About Syracuse University
Syracuse University is a private research university in Syracuse, New York. It was founded in 1870 with Methodist roots and operates today as a nonsectarian campus on a hill above downtown. The main campus covers about 700 acres. Its structure is a set of professional schools around a college of arts and sciences, rather than a land-grant or technical-institute model.
Graduate work is concentrated in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, the School of Information Studies, the School of Architecture, the College of Engineering and Computer Science, the Whitman School of Management, the College of Law, and the College of Visual and Performing Arts. University Hill also houses hospitals and research centers that public-affairs, communications, and STEM students use.
About 22,000 students enroll, including roughly 7,000 graduate and law students. International students are a sizable share of the graduate population and come from more than 100 countries. Alumni include President Joe Biden, who earned a law degree there, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, and sportscaster Bob Costas.
Degrees include the M.A., M.S., M.P.A., M.B.A., J.D., and Ph.D., with a mix of professional master's coursework and research doctorates under faculty supervision. The calendar is the semester. Assistantships and school fellowships are the usual doctoral support. Winters are long; graduate life sits between the hill campus, downtown Syracuse, and a regional city rather than a coastal metro.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Syracuse University lists 161 graduate programs across 44 subjects: 102 master's programs and 50 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in education, communication, media & journalism and health & medical sciences.
