About The University of Akron
The University of Akron is a public research university in Akron, Ohio. It opened in 1870 as Buchtel College, a Universalist college named for industrialist John R. Buchtel, later became a municipal university, and then a state university. Its defining fact is a long tie to Akron's rubber and polymer industry.
Colleges include engineering and polymer science, arts and sciences, business, health, and education. The College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering is the field for which the university is best known, and the Goodyear Polymer Center is the main laboratory building. Graduate students in engineering and the sciences also use corrosion, biomaterials, and applied-engineering facilities on a campus next to downtown.
Enrollment is about 15,000 students, with undergraduates in the majority and graduate students clustered in polymers, engineering, and professional fields. International students are a noticeable share of STEM graduate programs. Alumni are numerous in the tire, chemical, and manufacturing industries of Ohio.
Graduate study is known for the MS and PhD in polymer science and polymer engineering, alongside other master's and doctoral degrees in engineering and the sciences. The calendar is the semester system. Research assistantships are the usual support in laboratory groups. Students work on a compact urban campus beside downtown Akron, in a mid-sized industrial city in northeastern Ohio.
