About The University of New Mexico
The University of New Mexico is New Mexico's flagship public research university, founded in 1889 in Albuquerque. It grew from a territorial university into a multi-campus system whose main campus sits in Albuquerque's Nob Hill area, built largely in the Pueblo Revival style. It is a Hispanic-Serving Institution and the state's principal comprehensive research campus, distinct from the land-grant mission of New Mexico State University.
Colleges include Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Education, Fine Arts, the Anderson School of Management, Law, Architecture and Planning, and the Health Sciences Center, including the School of Medicine. Graduate strengths include medicine, law, Latin American studies, anthropology, optical science and engineering, and hydrology and arid-lands research. UNM Hospital and proximity to Sandia National Laboratories and Kirtland Air Force Base shape much of the research environment.
Enrollment on the Albuquerque campus is about 24,000 students, including several thousand graduate and professional students. The student body has a large Hispanic share and one of the larger Native American enrollments among U.S. research universities; international students come from Latin America, Asia, and elsewhere. Faculty number more than 2,000 across the main and health campuses. Alumni include writer Rudolfo Anaya and former U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman.
Graduate study includes MA, MS, and PhD degrees as well as the MD, JD, PharmD, and MBA. The model is the standard U.S. mix of coursework, exams, and supervised research or clinical training, on a semester calendar. Albuquerque sits at about 5,000 feet in the high desert; many graduate students commute, and campus life is that of a large public university in a mid-sized Southwestern city.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, The University of New Mexico lists 2 graduate programs in civil engineering and earth & environmental sciences, all of them doctoral programs.
