About The University of Toledo
The University of Toledo is a public research university in Toledo, Ohio. It was founded in 1872 as the Toledo University of Arts and Trades, later served as a municipal university, and became a state university. In 2006 it merged with the Medical University of Ohio, adding a health-science campus. That merger of a civic university with a medical school is its defining structural fact.
Colleges include engineering, arts and letters, business, law, pharmacy, nursing, education, and medicine and life sciences. The university is best known for engineering, pharmacy, and medicine. The University of Toledo Medical Center is the teaching hospital. Main-campus laboratories and a separate Health Science Campus house clinical and biomedical graduate work.
Enrollment is about 17,000 students, including professional students in medicine, law, and pharmacy. International students are a minority, concentrated in engineering and other STEM graduate programs. Faculty include a large clinical cohort on the health campus. Alumni work in northwest Ohio hospitals, courts, schools, and manufacturing.
Graduate study includes the PhD, the MD, the PharmD, the JD, and research and professional master's degrees. Supervision in the sciences follows the laboratory-group model; the health colleges follow professional-school coursework and clinical rotations. The calendar is the semester system. Assistantships support many research students. Daily life is split between a residential west Toledo campus and the medical campus in south Toledo.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, The University of Toledo lists 1 doctoral program, in psychology.
