About Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago

The Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago is a private graduate institute in computer science, founded in 2003 by Japan's Toyota Technological Institute. It occupies a building on the University of Chicago's Hyde Park campus and operates independently, with a single-field mission rather than undergraduate colleges.

Research groups work in machine learning, computer vision, speech and language, theoretical computer science, computational biology, and robotics. PhD students take TTIC courses and may cross-register at the University of Chicago. There is no undergraduate body and no medical or professional-school overlay.

The institute is small: on the order of a dozen faculty and about 40 to 50 PhD students, many of them international. Graduates move into academic computer science and industrial research laboratories rather than a long roster of public figures.

The degree is a PhD in computer science, with a research-first model, qualifying requirements, and close supervision. PhD students are typically funded with stipend and tuition. Hyde Park on Chicago's South Side is the daily setting, shared with University of Chicago students and facilities.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago lists 1 doctoral program, in computer science.
