About Tsinghua-Carnegie Mellon University

Tsinghua-Carnegie Mellon University names the dual-degree graduate partnership between Tsinghua University in Beijing, established in 1911, and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, established in 1900. It is a joint graduate arrangement in computing and engineering, not a separately chartered campus with its own undergraduate colleges.

The partnership is known for dual master's programs in computer science and in electrical and computer engineering, using Tsinghua's information-science schools and Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science and College of Engineering. Students use faculty and laboratories at both universities rather than a third standalone college.

Cohorts are small, typically tens of students per intake, with students from China, the United States, and other countries. Teaching staff are those of Tsinghua and Carnegie Mellon. Alumni of the dual programs enter technology firms, research labs, and further doctoral study.

Students earn master's degrees from both institutions after sequential residence in Beijing and Pittsburgh. The model is coursework plus a project or thesis, following each school's calendar in turn. Daily life alternates between Tsinghua's Haidian campus and Carnegie Mellon's campus in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Tsinghua-Carnegie Mellon University lists 1 master's program, in computer science.
