About UT Health San Antonio

UT Health San Antonio is a public academic health center of the University of Texas System in San Antonio, Texas. The Texas Legislature authorized it in 1959, and the medical school enrolled its first class in 1968. It is a standalone health-science campus rather than a college of a general university, located in the South Texas Medical Center.

Five schools organize graduate and professional education: the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, the School of Dentistry, the School of Nursing, the School of Health Professions, and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Research and clinical training run through University Hospital, the Mays Cancer Center, and institutes in military health, aging, and diabetes.

About 3,500 students are enrolled across the five schools, nearly all in graduate or professional programs. International students are a minority in the biomedical graduate school. Faculty number more than 1,500. Alumni include transplant surgeon and former University of Texas System chancellor Francisco G. Cigarroa and physicians and dentists across Texas.

Degrees include the MD, DDS, nursing master's and DNP, allied-health master's, MS and PhD in biomedical sciences, and dual MD/PhD paths. Training mixes coursework, clinical rotations, and laboratory supervision. The calendar follows professional-school terms. Stipends and training grants support many PhD students. Students live in San Antonio's medical-center district rather than on a traditional undergraduate campus.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, UT Health San Antonio lists 1 master's program, in biomedical engineering.
