About University of Arkansas
The University of Arkansas is the flagship public land-grant university of Arkansas, located in Fayetteville in the Ozark Mountains. It was founded in 1871 under the Morrill Act and remains the lead campus of the University of Arkansas System. It is a comprehensive research university on a single main campus, defined by that land-grant mission rather than by a collegiate system.
It comprises colleges of arts and sciences (the J. William Fulbright College), agriculture (Dale Bumpers College), architecture and design, business (the Sam M. Walton College of Business), education and health, engineering, and law, plus a graduate school. Graduate work is strongest in supply-chain management and business, agricultural and food sciences, engineering, and creative writing. Agricultural experiment stations and business and engineering research centers on the Fayetteville campus are the institutes most relevant to graduate students.
Enrollment is about 32,000 students, of whom roughly 4,000 to 5,000 are graduate and professional students. International students come from more than 100 countries but remain a modest share of the total. Faculty number more than 1,000. Notable alumni include U.S. senator J. William Fulbright, architect E. Fay Jones, and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
Graduate study includes MA, MS, MBA, MFA, JD, and PhD programs that mix coursework and a thesis or dissertation under a central graduate school. The calendar is the American semester system. Funding is through teaching and research assistantships, fellowships, and land-grant research grants. Fayetteville is a mid-sized college town; graduate life is campus-centered, with retail and agricultural industry ties in the region and Little Rock several hours away.
