About University of California–Hastings
The University of California College of the Law, San Francisco, long known as UC Hastings, is a public law school in Civic Center, San Francisco. Founded in 1878 by Serranus Clinton Hastings, California's first chief justice, it is the oldest law school in the state and the only University of California law school not attached to a general campus. It has kept its own board of directors while remaining inside the UC system. In 2023 it took the UC Law San Francisco name after the Hastings family asked that the former name be dropped.
The school is organized around the Juris Doctor, with graduate law degrees including the Master of Laws and master's programs in areas such as health policy and law. Teaching sits on a compact campus at 200 McAllister Street, beside state and federal courts. Clinics and centers in tax, negotiation, and health law place students in San Francisco courts and public agencies. There is no undergraduate college and no medical or engineering faculty.
Enrollment is about 1,000 students, nearly all in professional graduate study, including students from other states and other countries. The full-time faculty numbers several dozen law professors, joined by practitioners from the Bay Area bar. Alumni include U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown.
Graduate study is the J.D. as the main degree, with LL.M. and other master's options under a two-semester calendar and a summer term. Supervision follows the American law-school model of large doctrinal courses, seminars, and faculty-supervised clinics rather than a laboratory group. Students live in the city, not on a residential campus, and internships run through Bay Area courts, firms, and government offices.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of California–Hastings lists 1 master's program, in law.
