About University of Cincinnati

The University of Cincinnati is a public research university in Cincinnati, Ohio. It traces its origin to Cincinnati College, chartered in 1819, and later ran as a municipal university before entering the University System of Ohio. The main campus occupies Uptown Cincinnati beside the medical center. Its defining structural fact is cooperative education, introduced in 1906 by engineering dean Herman Schneider.

The university comprises more than a dozen colleges, including the College of Engineering and Applied Science; the College of Medicine; the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning; the Carl H. Lindner College of Business; the College-Conservatory of Music; and colleges of law, nursing, and pharmacy. Graduate students work with UC Medical Center and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Engineering, music, design, and biomedical science are established strengths.

Enrollment is about 48,000 across the main and regional campuses, including a large body of master's, doctoral, and professional students. International students number in the thousands and come from more than 100 countries. Alumni include U.S. president William Howard Taft, architect Michael Graves, and basketball player Oscar Robertson.

Graduate study includes research master's and PhDs plus MD, JD, PharmD, and other professional degrees. Engineering master's programs often keep a co-op or internship pattern. The calendar is a standard U.S. semester year. Assistantships, traineeships, and hospital appointments fund many doctoral and clinical students. Studios, laboratories, and the conservatory sit a short trip from downtown Cincinnati.
