About University of Delaware
The University of Delaware is a public land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant research university in Newark, Delaware. It traces to a Presbyterian academy founded in 1743, was chartered as a college in 1833, and became a university in 1921. It is the state's flagship campus, with additional sites in Wilmington, Dover, Georgetown, and Lewes. A colonial-era college later took on land-grant professional schools and a close historical link to Delaware's chemical industry.
Seven colleges cover agriculture and natural resources; arts and sciences; business and economics (Lerner); earth, ocean, and environment; education and human development; engineering; and health sciences, plus the Biden School of Public Policy and Administration. Graduate work is associated with chemical and materials engineering, marine science at Lewes, business, education, and public policy. The Delaware Biotechnology Institute and coastal laboratories on the Atlantic serve many graduate students.
About 24,000 students enroll, including several thousand graduate students and a few thousand international students from more than 100 countries. Faculty number about 1,200. Alumni include Joseph R. Biden Jr., who earned a bachelor's degree in 1965, inventor Robert W. Gore, and generations of chemical engineers who entered DuPont and related firms.
Graduate degrees include the Ph.D., M.S. and M.A., professional master's programs, and joint degrees. Engineering and science doctorates follow a lab-group model; the Biden School and Lerner College emphasize coursework and internships. The calendar is a semester system. Research assistantships are common in engineering and marine science. Newark is a small college town on the Northeast Corridor, with coastal fieldwork based in Lewes.
