About University of Hawaii
The University of Hawaii at Manoa is the flagship campus of the University of Hawaii system, a public land-grant and sea-grant research university in Honolulu. It opened in 1907 as the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts of the Territory of Hawaii and became the University of Hawaii in 1920. The Manoa campus occupies a valley inland from Waikiki, with marine and medical facilities elsewhere on Oahu.
Colleges and schools include ocean and earth science and technology, tropical agriculture, arts and sciences, engineering, business, law, education, and the John A. Burns School of Medicine. Graduate study is tied to oceanography, marine biology, astronomy associated with Mauna Kea observatories, Pacific and Asian studies, and tropical medicine. The East-West Center, next to campus, supports Asia-Pacific research. The University of Hawaii Cancer Center is an NCI-designated center.
Manoa enrolls about 19,000 students, with several thousand in graduate and professional programs. Students come from Hawaii, the U.S. mainland, Asia, and the Pacific Islands, and the international share is high for a U.S. public university. Faculty number more than 1,000. Alumni include U.S. senator Daniel Inouye, astronaut Ellison Onizuka, and U.S. senator Tammy Duckworth.
Degrees include MA, MS, and PhD programs and professional degrees in law, medicine, and architecture. The academic year is semesters. Research assistantships, East-West Center fellowships, and federal grants in ocean and space science commonly support graduate students. Honolulu is a large Pacific city; graduate work combines a valley campus with marine field sites and a high regional cost of living.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Hawaii lists 3 graduate programs in earth & environmental sciences and languages & linguistics, all of them doctoral programs.
