About University of Iowa
The University of Iowa is Iowa's public flagship research university, founded in 1847 in Iowa City. It was among the first public universities in the United States to admit women on the same basis as men. The campus occupies both banks of the Iowa River in a small college city, with the original Pentacrest at its center and a large academic medical complex to the east.
Colleges include the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, the College of Engineering, the Tippie College of Business, the College of Law, the College of Public Health, the College of Education, the College of Pharmacy, the College of Nursing, the College of Dentistry, and the Graduate College. The Iowa Writers' Workshop, founded in 1936, and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are the institutions graduate students encounter most often outside their home college.
Enrollment is about 30,000, including roughly 8,000 graduate and professional students. International students are a smaller share than at many coastal universities, typically around one in ten, from more than 100 countries. Faculty number more than 2,000. Alumni and workshop graduates include writer Flannery O'Connor, pollster George Gallup, and actor Gene Wilder.
Graduate routes include the PhD, MFA, MD, JD, PharmD, DDS, and a range of professional master's degrees. Doctoral work is supervision-led; the MFA in creative writing is workshop-based. The university follows a two-semester calendar. Teaching and research assistantships are the usual support for PhD students; medical and law students follow professional-school funding patterns. Iowa City is a compact campus town in which libraries, hospitals, and graduate housing sit within a short walk or bus ride.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Iowa lists 193 graduate programs across 41 subjects: 102 master's programs and 86 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in education, public health and music. University of Iowa holds rank 393 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
