About University of Kentucky
The University of Kentucky is Kentucky's flagship public research university, located in Lexington. It opened in 1865 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky and remains a land-grant institution under the Morrill Act. It grew from an A&M college into a single campus of 16 colleges and an academic medical center on more than 800 acres in the Bluegrass. That pairing of land-grant colleges with UK HealthCare on one site is its defining structure.
Work is organized through colleges of Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Agriculture, Food and Environment, Business and Economics, Education, Law, Pharmacy, Nursing, Public Health, Medicine, Design, Communication and Information, and Social Work. UK HealthCare and Albert B. Chandler Hospital, the Markey Cancer Center, and the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center are the hospitals and institutes graduate students in medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, and biomedical science use most. Research students concentrate in medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, equine science, and engineering.
About 32,000 students enroll, of whom roughly 8,000 are in graduate and professional programs. International students make up about one tenth of the student body and come from more than 100 countries. Faculty number more than 2,000. Alumni include geneticist Thomas Hunt Morgan, chemist William Lipscomb, and writer Wendell Berry.
The university awards research doctorates, professional degrees in medicine, pharmacy, and law, and research master's degrees. Graduate study follows a departmental model of coursework, exams, and a dissertation or clinical training on a two-semester calendar with a summer term. Research assistantships and college fellowships are the usual support for doctoral students. Daily life is on the Lexington campus and in UK HealthCare, within walking distance of downtown Lexington.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Kentucky lists 4 graduate programs across 4 subjects, all of them doctoral programs, with the widest choice in economics, pharmacy and physics.
