About University of La Verne
The University of La Verne is a private university in La Verne, California, about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It was founded in 1891 by members of the Church of the Brethren as Lordsburg College and took its present name in 1917. It grew from a church college into a regional university with a main campus in the San Gabriel Valley and additional teaching sites across Southern California for working adults.
Academic units include the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Public Management, and the LaFetra College of Education. A College of Law operated in Ontario, California, and later closed. Graduate strengths are education, public administration, organizational leadership, business, and psychology. The regional campus network serves teachers and public-sector managers who study while employed.
Enrollment is about 6,000 to 8,000 students across all sites, with a large share of graduate and adult learners relative to traditional-age undergraduates. International students are a minority of the main-campus population. Faculty number in the hundreds. Alumni work mainly in California schools, municipal administration, and regional business.
Graduate study is built around master's degrees in education, public administration, and business, plus doctorates in education and psychology. Many programs use evening, weekend, and hybrid coursework rather than full-time laboratory cohorts. The academic year follows a standard United States semester calendar. Support includes assistantships on the main campus and employer-sponsored study for working students. The La Verne campus is a suburban site; most graduate students commute across the San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empire.
