About University of Maryland–Baltimore
The University of Maryland, Baltimore is a public professional and graduate campus in downtown Baltimore, distinct from the University of Maryland, College Park. It was founded in 1807 as the College of Medicine of Maryland. The Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, opened in 1840 and later incorporated here, was the first dental college in the United States. The campus is organized around professional schools rather than a liberal-arts undergraduate college.
Seven schools cover medicine, law, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, social work, and a Graduate School that administers MS and PhD programs. Clinical training is anchored at the University of Maryland Medical Center, the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, and the Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. Research strengths include infectious disease, trauma, oncology, and health policy. The Francis King Carey School of Law shares the west-side campus with the health schools.
Enrollment is about 7,000 students, nearly all graduate or professional. Students come mainly from Maryland and other U.S. states, with a smaller international group in the Graduate School. Faculty number in the thousands across the schools and hospital. Alumni include U.S. senator Ben Cardin and former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley, both graduates of the law school.
The campus awards MD, JD, DDS, PharmD, DNP, and MSW degrees as well as research master's and PhDs. Calendars vary by school, and medicine runs on a year-round clinical cycle. Funding includes NIH training grants, clinical residencies, and graduate assistantships. The schools occupy a few blocks of downtown Baltimore west of the Inner Harbor.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Maryland–Baltimore lists 3 graduate programs in biology and law: 1 master's program and 1 doctoral program.
